LAUREL, MD — In a continuing effort to provide the best wireless service for local residents, Verizon Wireless has increased the 3G data handling capacity of its network in Franklin County, Virginia.

Expanded 3G data capacity in Franklin County lets more customers using tablets, laptops or smartphones instantly download the latest apps, music, videos or 3D games; rapidly browse the Web to keep up with news, sports, stock quotes; send and receive emails in real-time as well as open and download attachments; enjoy turn-by-turn navigation; and more.

The increased coverage is part of the company’s aggressive multi-billion dollar network investment each year to stay ahead of the growing demand for Verizon Wireless’ voice and data services. Last year alone, the company spent $347 million on regional network improvements, bringing total network investment in the region since 2000 to more than $2.6 billion.

“More and more people rely on smartphones and 3G apps to manage their busy lives and stay connected at home or on-the-go,” said Mike Maiorana, Verizon Wireless regional president. “We’re committed to continuously improving our network to provide our customers with the 3G advantage, coverage and speed they want and need.”

Verizon Wireless has the nation’s largest and most reliable 3G broadband network which makes advanced services like turn-by-turn navigation, over-the-air downloads of the latest applications, text/picture messaging, video and music downloads, web browsing and 3D gaming possible. Mobile Broadband customers in enhanced broadband wireless coverage areas can expect average download speeds of 600 kilobits per second (kbps) to 1.4 megabits and average upload speeds of 500-800 kbps. Customer demand for these advanced services continues to grow.

In addition to enhancing its 3G network, Verizon Wireless has deployed its 4G LTE Network in 74 metropolitan areas and 76 commercial airports coast to coast covering one-third of all Americans. During 2011, the company will continue to expand its 4G footprint to include more than 175 markets by year-end. PLATTSBURGH, NY — Verizon Wireless announced today that it has activated the 7th of 14 planned sites that will eventually close a more-than-50-mile coverage gap along Interstate 87 – the Northway – between Albany and Plattsburgh. The new site in Lewis improves coverage and capacity along portions of Interstate 87, Route 9, Trout Pond Road, and Hale Hill Road.

This network expansion is part of the company’s aggressive multi-billion dollar network investment each year to stay ahead of the growing demand for Verizon Wireless’ voice and data services. The company has invested more than $65 billion nationwide since it was formed – $6 billion on average every year – and invested more than $125 million in Upstate New York in 2010.

In addition to ongoing investment in its 3G network, Verizon Wireless recently began rolling out its 4G LTE network nationwide. As of mid-June, 4G LTE will be available in 76 metro markets, including Rochester and the New York City area. The company recently announced it will launch 4G LTE in Albany, Syracuse and Ithaca later this year. Full nationwide 4G LTE deployment is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2013.

“We’re proud of the progress we’re making to close the wireless gap along the Northway. It’s just one example of our efforts to aggressively invest in our Upstate New York network to increase coverage and capacity for our customers, add new services like 4G LTE, and maintain our existing 3G network leadership,” said Gene Fassett, executive director of Network for Verizon Wireless’ Upstate New York Region.

Verizon Wireless recently earned recognition from J.D. Power and Associates for “Highest Call Quality Performance among Wireless Cell Phone Users in the Northeast.”

In addition to voice and wireless data services such as V CAST Video and V CAST Music with Rhapsody, the company offers MobileBroadband, its high-speed wireless broadband network geared toward mobile professionals and business customers. In 4G LTE coverage areas, it provides average speeds of 5-12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2-5 Mbps on the uplink in real-world, loaded network environments. In 3G coverage areas, it provides average download speeds of 600 kilobits per second (kbps) to 1.4 Mbps, and average upload speeds of 500-800 kbps.

Strong demand for Verizon Wireless’ services continued during the first quarter of 2011 as the company added more than 1.8 million net new customers.

The company’s “nation’s most reliable wireless network” reputation is based on network studies performed by test men and women throughout the country. These engineers drive nearly 100 specially equipped vehicles more than 1 million miles annually on Interstate, U.S. and state highways, as well as major roads and surface streets. Test vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than 3 million voice call attempts and more than 16 million data tests annually on Verizon Wireless’ network and the networks of other carriers.
